Foursquare is ditching Check-ins
You might be tempted to double check today's date to make sure it's not April 1st, but there's no need for it. Foursquare is about to become the app formerly known as the app that made check-ins famous, as it will stop having check-ins.
It does sound strange, how can Foursquare pull back a feature that is it's own core? Well, to begin with, Foursquare is not that crazy, it will still allow you do to all the check-ins you like and check out where your friends are, in a new app called Swarm. But in its main app, Foursquare is focusing on becoming a discovery and recommendation app that allows you to find the best spots for whatever you may want, from restaurants to shops to... anything else you might imagine.
Sure, it won't be easy for many of its users - after years of check-ins made in this app - but on the other hand, this is something that comes to prove my point. I'm not a Foursquare user because it didn't make sense for me to have additional trouble to tell an app where I was, when the app could/should know that automatically. Now, Foursquare is doing just that. Even though you don't have a way to manually check-in at a place (unless you use the Swarm app), the Foursquare app will do what they call implict check-ins, detecting your patterns, and knowing that if you've visited several japanese restaurants in the past months, then you'll probably prefer one the next time you ask for a nice restaurant.
Maybe there's a lot of people that felt like me... and that will now be willing to give this new check-in-less Foursquare a try.
